Monday (er, Tuesday) Musings - No. 1, Vol. 22

Again, I missed the Monday part of the Musings because of pregnant brain and heavy workload. Meh, whatevs. "Tuesday Musings" sounds nice too...

First preseason game for the Blazers is tonight. I'm stoked, but also worried that after 2.5 hours in a little chair, my back is going to SCREAM. It's already hurty most of the time.
My friend Charles took some fantastic photos of my pregnant self (and of the husband) this weekend. I'm narcissistic enough that I've already looked at them at least 5 times today.
I'm pretty sure I need a different desk chair here at work. After only a few hours in it, my back and ribcage get very very sore.
I made mini pumpkin cupcakes last week to welcome Fall...they turned out great. I love pumpkin goodies.
Niners are 3-1 and have a 2.5 game lead in the (awful) NFC West already. I'm thinking playoffs.
Speaking of football success, my Vandies are 4-1 and possibly bowl-bound for the first time in 11 years! Too bad that we won't be able to travel to any bowl they might make this year, because of baby.
I can now feel the baby's body and limbs from the outside when she moves. This is a little weird and a little awesome at the same time.
I've become a little addicted to the People of Walmart website. Holy crap.

Pregnancy Grumbles (aka Why I'm Only Doing This Once)

As a first-time mom (to-be), I'm often surprised at the way my body has reacted to the incubation of Little Miss Fetus. Sometimes, these surprises are pleasant (Oh, my ass isn't that huge...yet!) and sometimes not (Oh, my back feels like it's been put through a pasta maker!). Now that I'm firmly into my third trimester, I'm definitely feeling the 'sometimes not' pleasant surprises more than the pleasant ones. Since the plan is to NOT be pregnant again - and this was the plan looooong before the pregnancy even occurred - I thought I'd record some of my more recent 'surprises' for posterity's sake...and to hold over the baby's head when she's a teenager and making me crazy.

1. Boobs. Oh, the joys of pregnant boobs. It's not just that they get bigger. They get HEAVIER, too. Try strapping two 5-lb weights to your chest, harness them in with an industrial-strength bra, and wear them around all day every day, and then you'll have a basic understanding of pregnant boobs. And I haven't even gotten to Lactating Boobs yet. Eeeesh.

2. Fat stores. The pregnancy books will warn you, early on, that your body will make and stubbornly hang onto these lovely "energy bundles" called maternal fat stores. For the first six months of my pregnancy, I didn't really notice them. Now, however, I've discovered where they've been hiding: my back. Yep, I'm now the proud owner of a blubbery layer of maternal back fat. Ah, awesome. And sooooo attractive when paired with the giant boobs and industrial strength bra.

3. Heartburn (and other GI maladies). This makes sense and therefore, isn't much of a surprise. But it still sucks. Obviously, you start out pregnancy with an abdomen full of organs already. But when the little ol' uterus gets all full of baby and amniotic fluid and placenta action, it has to push those existing organs out of the way to make room. Well, this primarily affects your digestive system, if you remember where things are positioned in the human body. Your stomach shrinks, your intestines get squished and pushed around...it makes for a very unhappy GI tract on the whole. It throws hissy fits that manifest themselves as heartburn, gas, constipation, and nausea. Good times! Yet, you're still hungry. All. The. Time.

4. Sore back. This is the real bastard of them all. At least, it is for me. I'm fine with pain that can be resolved quickly...but pregnant back pain isn't like that at all. Again, this is a relatively new surprise and one that I thought might never come, since I hadn't had anything but sporadic backaches during the second trimester. However, the baby is growing very quickly now and therefore, I'm carrying a lot more weight on the front side of my body. My back, as strong as it may be, just cannot compensate for this extra weight and yelps out in pain constantly. I've heard that I can get one of those maternity belts to hold up my belly and that can help, but I'm skeptical. The weight is still there and for the next 2+ months, ain't going anywhere.

5. Hair. Okay, this is a double-edged sword. I love my pregnant hair...it's fuller, shinier, grows faster, and is just all around better than non-pregnant hair. But if you think about it, hair doesn't just grow on your head, right? Welcome to pregnancy-induced Yeti syndrome. The hair on your body grows faster too - but just for kicks, Mama Nature decided to also make your skin more sensitive at the same time. Shaving is a constant battle. I should just buy stock in Gillette (or P&G, whoever owns the brand) because I go through razor blades like water. Same with shave gel, because my skin does NOT like the shaving at all. Extra fast-growing hair + sensitive skin = pregnant Yeti-like creature.

6. Skin. Have you ever wished you could revisit your adolescent years and have the skin of your 14-year-old acne prone self? No? Then don't get pregnant. My skin full-on FREAKED OUT when I got pregnant. It still does, but to a lesser degree (I keep switching up my face wash; I have about three in the rotation, because I think it keeps my pores too busy guessing to actually produce oil). However, if I neglect ONE face washing, the very next day, I'll have two or three new blemishes to show for my laziness. Pregnant women "glow" b/c they have oilier skin then normal. And it's not attractive, it's annoying.

7. Sleep. Because this is my first go-round on the pregnancy carousel, I thought I'd be lucky enough to get plenty of sleep before the baby came. All the pregnancy books tell you to rest as much as you can before the baby arrives, because we all know sleep becomes nothing more than a sweet memory after that. What the books sometimes forget to tell you is that pregnant sleep is more like pregnant nap/doze/wake/repeat. I can (and do) go to bed at 9pm most nights, and am usually asleep by 9:30. But I never sleep through the night - especially now that I'm like a beached whale in bed. I have a body pillow and an extra pillow to help me stay positioned on my side, but I always have to wake up and roll over, reposition the pillows, get myself comfortable again, and by that time, I'm AWAKE and it takes me a good 15-30 minutes just to fall asleep again. This happens about 3-4 times a night. You do the math. Have I gotten a full, uninterrupted 8-hour night of sleep in the last several months? No. And I won't get one for the next several years, either.

8. Ligament pain. This is a fun one. You get warned about this early and often in the pregnancy books, but until your uterus starts really growing, you don't think about it much. And then one day, while you're walking to your car, you suddenly stop and grab at your sides, gasping for air because you are in so much pain. A contraction? Nope, "just" a round ligament pain. These suckers hurt - and they come on out of nowhere. My personal favorite episode of this was when the husband and I were walking from one side of Husky Stadium to the other for a tailgate a few weeks ago. I'm normally a brisk walker, so I was carrying on with my usual pace...bad idea jeans. About halfway through our jaunt, I had to stop and rest. Twenty more steps, another sharp pain, and more resting. Lather, rinse, repeat. This while the husband is toting two large bags full of our beverages and foodstuffs for the tailgate...nice, huh? Ligament pains suuuuuuck, and they definitely get worse the longer you're pregnant and the larger you get.

Now, I could wax poetic about swollen appendages and cankles, but that hasn't happened to me yet. Nor have I gotten any stretchmarks. Yet. So those have been my third trimester 'good' surprises. So far. (Are you sensing the theme here?) My time for those may very well be just around the corner, but I'll be glad for now that I haven't had to deal with them yet. Yet.

Monday Musings - No. 1, Vol. 21

Multitasking is a skill in which I take a lot of pride. (See how I avoided ending that sentence with a preposition? And see how awkward it is?) I multitask all the time; it's just how I do things. I hate when I read about some study that shows how multitaskers are actually less successful b/c their attention is divided so much of the time. I say pish-posh...if you aren't a highly-functioning multitasker, then stop doing it. Leave it to us professionals. Not everyone can be an NFL QB, and not everyone can be a successful multitasker. Musing while I do actual work and listen to a podcast...

My stomach is shrinking to make room for the ever-expanding uterus. Mother Nature is a funny lady - I need to eat more now, but I don't have room in my tummy for a full meal. Hilarious.
Dentist appointment on Thursday. Time for my bi-annual "You Need to Floss More" lecture. I feel bad for my hygenist - she tells me the same thing, every time I'm there, and every time, I'm forced to admit that I rarely floss.
I love Nutella.
My cellular phone is possessed. All weekend it kept setting the volume level from 'vibrate' to 'level 2' and back again. I finally got it to stop yesterday, but it was weirding me out. When will the iPhone finally be available on Verizon??
The Niners did not let me down this weekend. Beating the Seahawks and cracking Hasselbeck's ribs in the process is impressive (I'm not a Hasselbeck fan, he just bugs)...I think this team is starting to get its poop grouped.
Just over 11 weeks to my due date. Which means 9 more weeks of work until my leave starts. Suh-weet.
My alma mater is holding Homecoming over Halloween weekend. If you were an alumni's kid, wouldn't you be pissed? How can you go trick-or-treating? I think the university should offer a tailgate trick or treat...but only in the alumni area. Leave the drunk students' tailgate area out of it.
Did I mention I only have TWO MONTHS of work left before I get to take my 3-month leave? Not that I'm counting down or anything.
Emmy thoughts: Didn't watch the show, think the 30 Rock love train needs to stop, Rainn Wilson was robbed, loved Christina Hendricks' dress. I just love her, actually. Her body is SICK.
The IHOP NFL commercials need to end. Now. NOW.
Blazers' first preseason game is on Oct. 6...I can't believe it's almost basketball season. I'm super excited - but I will observe a moment of silence now that Channing Frye is gone to Phoenix. Sad.

Monday Musings, No. 1. Vol. 20

I know this is a day late, but I'm still calling it a Musings post. I was out of the office most of last week, so I had a decent amount of email to get caught up on yesterday, so I couldn't blog during work hours, and in the evening I had a nice little visit from the Heartburn Fairy that left me fairly immobilised and worthless. Tardy to the party musings commence...

Fun weekend in Seattle, despite a first-quarter hiccup in our seating arrangments at Husky Stadium. And of course, the W was as wonderful as I remembered and I scored a full set of unused Bliss samples from the bathroom to take home.
Niners won their first game of the year, which sets up the inevitable disappointing loss to come next week. Ah, football.
Baby's new favorite game: Punch Mommy in the Cervix. It's a lot of fun...for her.
Speaking of la bambina, we shall see her again on Thursday at our ultrasound appointment. I hope she looks more like a baby this time and less like an alien.
Sopresseta salumi is delicious. I love it on a sandwich with sharp white cheddar, baby spinach and dijon mustard. Mmmm...tasty.
The NBA season is just around the corner. This year, they moved the annual Blazers FanFest back to a Sunday evening, but we have youth group on Sunday evenings, so we'll have to give our tickets away. Boo.
Fall means time to make fruit crisps. Even if you can't bake, you can make a fruit crisp. Seriously, just try it. I promise you won't mess it up if you just follow a simple recipe and use good fruit.
Dan Brown's new book is out today. I'll probably get it for the Kindle, but I wouldn't pay hardcover price for it. Not for mindless leisure reading material.
*The Office* is back on Thursday. I've missed My Show terribly.
I took my SUV into a GM service center yesterday because it was making a weird noise above 35mph. Turns out it needed a new wheel bearing...and because we had the foresight to purchase a 7-year extended warranty when we bought the car, the total cost of the bearing replacement was covered. All I had to pay for was the oil change I requested. Who knew that a car warranty was more awesome than health insurance?

Seattle calling

I head out for a weekend in Seattle today. If you are reading this and know where I live, please don't break into my house. I would hate to come home to a mess and a missing TV.

The husband scored some free nights at any Westin property during his summer work travels to Dallas, so we are shacking up at the W Seattle this weekend. I love this place...it's beautiful, stylish, modern, and just all around fancy. Plus, they stock Bliss products in the bathroom! Bliss stuff rules, especially their conditioner.

Tomorrow is the reason I'm heading up to the Emerald City for the weekend - the big game: UI vs. UW at Husky Stadium. Booyah. (I promise that'll be the last time I use "booyah" on my blog.) Since I can't drink at the tailgate, and kickoff is at 12:30pm, it's gonna be a long-ass day. Thanks God for the heavenly beds at the W because I'm gonna need all the sleep I can get tonight and tomorrow. I do love Husky Stadium in September, though...the weather will be perfect and the lake breeze helps keep the place from getting boiling hot.

Pictures to come - and stories from the weekend too - on Monday. Go Vandals!!

Monday Musings, No. 1 Vol. 19

Musings are back! It's been a crazy Monday - I overslept (by, um, nearly TWO HOURS...oh the joys of pregnancy exhaustion) and then whilst working from home, our Verizon FiOS internet crapped out (extended outage - no ETA for the fix), so I scrambled to get ready over the lunch hour and hauled myself into the office for the afternoon. Googily moogily. Let's muse:

I'm only supposed to be pregnant for another 15 weeks. That seems so weird. Also, scary.
I had a fun laid-back family baby shower in Spokane this weekend and got a LOT of great stuff. I even managed to put the baby's swing together by myself last night when I got home. And I only swore 3 times while doing so.
I love HGTV's Design Star. I'm rooting for Dan (he's from Portland)...he's adorable and I think he has great style.
We have had white peaches in the free fruit bins at work lately. I love white peaches, and since they're free, even the underripe ones taste good.
I like squeegying (sp?) the shower in the morning after I'm done in there. It's the perfect tiny, easy chore for neat freaks when time is short.
The baby is funny these days - she goes nuts with her rolling, kicking, and punching for several minutes at a time, but as soon as Nick comes over to feel her move, she stops. Stubborn little miss.
It's FOOTBALL SEASON! Yes! Should be interesting being the sober kid at tailgates this year, but I think I can manage. As long as no one drinks a pumpkin ale next to me, no blood or tears will be shed.
I have a package of Reese's Dark PB Cups sitting on my desk right now. I'm full from lunch, but I really want to eat one.
Nick and I played the "athlete mancrush" game on the drive home from Spokane yesterday. In a nutshell, the point of the game is to name the athletes you crush on, but in a totally platonic way. Halfway through my list, I realized this game is very difficult to play if you are a straight female. Nick killed it though.

Blogging Delinquency

I'm assuming I spelled "delinquency" correctly in the post title, but if not, feel free to correct me in a comment. I have forgotten to do a Musings post the last two Mondays, which is a little unusual for me. It's been a very hectic month (is August OVER yet?) so my blogging schedule has been a little out of whack. That being said, here are a few updates for you faithful readers:

  • Baby: she's growing just fine and so is her mom. We have a follow-up ultrasound scheduled for Sept. 17th to check on the position of my low-lying placenta (typing all of this makes me feel like I'm violating my own HIPAA rights, but whatever) and take another gander at the babe. My 28-week appointment is the following day, and that will mark the end of my monthly visits to the doc, and starts the 'every two week' appt cycle until the last month of my pregnancy, when I have to go every flippin' week.

  • Neighbor: No more blatant crazy, and in fact, she's keeping her dogs in check, so that's been nice. The polite thing to do would be to go over there with some muffins and thank her for her cooperation but I think it would just be awkward, and frankly, I'm not that polite. So I keep ignoring her and all is well.

  • Work: This is a recession and I'm thankful I have a well-paying, stable job. But there's a lot to do these days, and projects are crazy, so it's stressful and makes it hard to remember to be thankful for said job. So here's my visible reminder: I'm thankful for my job.

  • Play: We've spent the last two weekends traveling eastward (first to L-town for my reunion, then to Walla Walla for my friend's wedding) and will do so again this weekend (to Spokane for Nick's reunion and a baby shower). After that, we don't have to drive anywhere again until the weekend of UI homecoming, thanks God. All that time spent in the Civic has killed Nick's back and hasn't done mine any favors. But our weekends, while they will soon be road trip-free, aren't going to clear up anytime soon. My stepmom will be over for Labor Day, then we have the UI-UW game in Seattle the following weekend, and the weekend after that is our childbirth training seminar. I need a break.

Happy Hump Day and please check out this kid's Twitter feed, if you haven't already (site URL NSFW). It's hilarious.

Me @ Bite of Oregon

Alright, as promised, here is a photo of me and the bump at Bite a couple weeks ago. I should have posted on Monday, but I didn't have much to muse about, so I didn't. And this week has been chock-full of neighborhood soap opera FAIL and while it makes for some fun back-and-forth on my Facebook status updates, I don't really feel like retelling the story here on my blog.

Therefore, enjoy the pregnant happiness emanating from my person in this photo, and forget about my saltiness on the FB over recent days:

Monday Musings - No. 1, Vol. 18

I intended to jazz this post up with a photo of me and the bump at Bite of Oregon on Saturday, but I forgot to upload the photos last night, so that'll have to wait until maybe tomorrow. Or next week...actually, just plan on seeing them next week. It's been an interesting month around here - lots of baby planning stuff going on, work craziness showing no signs of letting up, and three weekends' worth of travel back to Idaho/E. Washington on the schedule through August. Musings commence.

Saw Julie and Julia with my BFF on Friday night. The theater was PACKED...which totally surprised me. It's was a pretty good movie and definitely makes me want to practice some fancy French cooking and baking.
Nick felt the bambina move for the first time yesterday. She was moving pretty well in there so I had him put his hand on the ol' belly and taaaa-daaa...she kicked (or punched, we don't know) him pretty well. I guess she assumed he'd be here this morning at 4:30 - he wasn't, back to Seattle for work - because she decided to kick/punch/flip like crazy and woke me out of a dead sleep. Thanks, baby.
Bite of Oregon was a load of fun - but I should post about that with photos. We took a lot, especially of our food. Highly recommend the Pommes Frites booth if they come back next year, and the seared scallop w/cucumber salad from H50 here in Portland.
For those who might be wondering, the baby now has a name. It is...still a surprise. We are determined to make everyone wait to find out when she's born, because well, it's fun for us. And we're the parents, so we're entitled to be this way about her name if we want to. Neener neener.
We signed up for Netflix and I love it! How did we manage to wait so long for this magical service? I don't think we'll get caught up on Mad Men in time for the S3 premiere on Sunday, but we'll just save them on the DVR until we are. What a great show.
Yesterday we got new towels at Bed Bath & Beyond. I love new towels.
My 1o-year reunion is this weekend and I'm hoping it's fun, but who knows. Should be interesting at the very least.

Quick Workday Posting

I didn't do a Musings post yesterday because I was too busy at work to take a blogging break and when I got home the last thing I wanted to do was sit in front of a computer again. So instead, I watched the rest of the first disc of Mad Men Season 1 (sorry, Nick!) and relaxed. It was nice, until the baby decided she wanted to practice her jujitsu on my uterine wall for an hour. Ah, kids.

But I wanted to get a quick posting in today before I got super-busy and forgot. Plans are coming together for the arrival of the little girl - her nursery furniture arrived yesterday; the boxes are just waiting in the garage for Nick to get home from Seattle and assemble. Of course, we might need to wait on that until we a) clear out the old furniture currently taking up space in her room and b) paint the walls and install a chair rail. In due time - pun intended. Our registries are complete - Target and Babies R Us, per the usual - and full of stuff you'd never think a baby required, but for some reason, they do. We're signed up for both a weekend birthing class AND a parenting/breastfeeding class in the fall. So yeah, we're making progress on the Great Parenting Project.

Just a quick plug for any of you who live in Portland: Bite of Oregon is this weekend at Waterfront Park. I love this event. We went for the first time last year and had a BLAST. Luckily, I can't partake of the sake, wine, and beer booths this year (that boozetastic combo did make my specific memories a little hazy) but the food...oh man, the food. I'm definitely looking forward to pigging my way through the delicious petits plats offered from both Portland-area and "outer Oregon" restaurants. If you have time this weekend, you should go. Admission is pretty cheap and so are the prices for food, beer, wine, gadgets, etc.
